Shining Stars 2017

The Wornington Green Christmas Party & Shining Star Awards took place on Friday 8 December 2017 at the Venture Centre and attracted over 40 local people. As well as celebrating the festive season, the event also recognised several amazing residents on Wornington Green and Portobello Square who are doing a fantastic job volunteering and supporting their neighbours, friends and the local community.

The winners of the 2017 Shining Star Award are Raymond Brett, Cheryl Thomas, Kathy Webb, Sally Henderson and Britney Batousol, voted for by their fellow residents and Catalyst staff. The Wornington Green Community Group and the Residents’ Steering Group also received recognition for the fantastic work they do to represent their community.

Cheryl is the Chair of Wornington Green Community Group. She works extremely hard, with the help of the group, to organise various activities and trips for residents. She also oversees the coffee afternoon that takes place every Wednesday at Portobello Hall.

Before Raymond moved into his new home on Portobello Square, he supported his neighbours at Telford House by helping to maintain their gardens.

Now, he regularly volunteers at his local church, helping to maintain the church grounds and assisting his neighbours to do their shopping as and when necessary.

Kathy has been running the Sunday Bingo Club, which now takes place at Portobello Hall, for over ten years.

As well as helping Kathy with the Bingo Club, Sally is the go-to person for people in the community who need someone to look after their dog if they go on holiday or in the event of an emergency. One of her neighbours described her as “very helpful, always there for others and very reliable.”

Britney has worked hard over the past year supporting young people at the Venture Centre and St Charles homework clubs. She also helps to maintain the Wornington Green Community Kitchen Garden. One of the Venture Centre staff described her as “a perfect example of what our young people can and should be.”

As well as the awards, party-goers enjoyed a home-cooked meal, live entertainment, music and a raffle.
