Visit the Venture Centre on a Thursday morning and you’ll be greeted by quite a sight. Various pieces of material sit on tables, piled high and waiting to be used.
“ We blend the traditional with the modern: we cut, we shave, both with a nod to tradition but our approach is more rock ‘n’ roll.” Martyn is describing his new barbers business, Brbr Bullet (pronounced Barber Bullet) at the top of Portobello Road, opposite Portobello Square.
To say that Jerry has a wide range of job experience is something of an understatement. In recent times he has fitted security and mobility aids, delivered packages by cycle, worked as a carpenter and co-run a Portobello-based floristry and gardening company that had clients including Madonna, Brian Eno and Harry Enfield and his wife.
“We were taking a Sunday afternoon stroll along Portobello Road, when we came across the new homes being built. Before that we didn’t know anything about the scheme – ‘When did this happen?’ we thought! – but talked about it over a cup of coffee at a nearby café and thought it could be just the place for us.”
“Once Catalyst called, asking if I’d like to submit my ideas, I just had to get this commission. I really, really wanted this.” Artist Fiona Hawthorne is talking about her latest project, the newly-installed artwork covering the pedestrian ramp outside of Paul House, and it is immediately clear just how important to her this part of London is.
