Celebration of African History

There is nothing like spending an evening listening to good music and eating home cooked West Indian and Malaysian food in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and it only takes a quiz to engage local residents to share their knowledge of African history.

An event took place on Wednesday 26 October at the Venture Centre and attracted over 100 local people. The performers included a variety of artists, poets, a story teller, a gospel youth choir, and a health and well-being project that featured a live performance of African dancers. Several stalls were set up for visitors to mull around selling music CDs, showcasing clothes made locally, providing information and paint work from Pepperpot – the African Caribbean Day Centre. As one visitor said, “there was something for everyone.”

The intergenerational mix of performers was equally mirrored by the diversity of people who attended. The event represented an important step in bringing attention to the variety of African communities living on the Wornington Green estate and to celebrate Black History Month this year.
