A Letter From Community Outreach Worker

I would like to introduce myself to you as the Community Outreach Worker, primarily for the Wornington Green estate, but also for the Sheltered Housing Scheme at Evelyn Fox Court.

My role is to support the over 55s by offering independent information and advice covering areas such as welfare benefits and signposting to other organisations. A significant part of my role is to offer emotional and practical support for older people affected by the regeneration of the estate.

I will also be helping residents access services such as Age Concern Kensington and Chelsea’s de-cluttering service, providing information on volunteering opportunities and supporting the various activities and services run during a period of change and possible stress.

A coffee afternoon, run in conjunction with an information and advice drop-in currently takes place in the residents’ room at 8c Chiltern House, Wornington Road, W10 5RL every Wednesday between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Why not pop in? I would love to meet you! You are assured of a warm welcome and a decent cup of coffee. Health information sheets on a range of topics such as Diabetes, Blood Pressure and Arthritis are also available.

From September, in addition to being held in the residents’ room, one Wednesday each month, the coffee afternoon will take place at the Venture Centre instead and there will be a bit more on offer.

Future activities

Bingo
We want to restart the bingo sessions held in the residents’ room and would like to know how many residents would be interested in attending. The sessions would take place on Sundays, on a date to be advised, between 4pm and 6pm and limited to a maximum of 20 residents.

Reminiscence
I will be running a 4 week project on life before the Wornington Green estate was built and would love to hear your story. The project starts on Monday 12 September from 2.30pm to 4.30pm in the residents’ room and I am looking for 4 – 6 residents to participate. Light refreshments will be provided and a booklet detailing your stories will be produced at the end of the project. If you are unable to attend due to mobility problems, don’t let that put you off, I can come to you. We will also be running a Black History project in October. Suggestions for other topics are welcomed.

Exercise classes
I am currently in discussions with Open Age to try and set up a class at the Venture Centre.

Tea Dance
Would you be interested in attending? If enough residents are keen, I would love to arrange one at the Venture Centre.

I am here to support the older residents, please let me know how I can help you, by way of a future activity or service you would like me to provide, a question you would like to ask, to just have a chat about anything that may be bothering you or something you need advice on.

If you would like to attend any of the current or future activities listed or have suggestions for future projects or have a skill you would like to share with others, or if you want to volunteer, please contact me on 020 8969 9105.

I look forward to meeting or hearing from as many of you as possible.

Bernice Semple, Community Outreach Worker
