Over 75 local young people attended the You & Your Future Job Fair at the Venture Centre on Tuesday 23 June, following a targeted marketing campaign and local outreach.
The successful event was organised by the Portobello Square team, in partnership with Ardmore, Catalyst, K10 and the Venture Centre and offered free construction training courses and employment opportunities in the local area.
In the weeks leading up to the event a targeted outreach programme ensured key community groups and clubs in the local area were made aware of the opportunities available at the fair. This was supported by a compelling marketing campaign including a dedicated hashtag: #EarnYourStripes, to promote engagement and interest.
On the day, representatives from Ardmore and its sub-contractors were on hand to provide advice and information on the seven apprenticeship roles on offer at Portobello Square, which included opportunities in plumbing, carpentry, painting & decorating, electrical and business administration.
20 people were selected for the pre-employment courses, of which nine are Catalyst residents. The successful candidates will now study for their BTEC level one awards in Work Skills and Health & Safety at Work with a view to taking up one of the apprenticeships on offer on completion.
Two full-time employment opportunities were also available: a one year contract at Portobello Square as a Grounds Maintenance worker and a one year internship at local estate agent ReMax. Interviews are currently taking place and the successful applicants will be appointed in the next couple of weeks.
Look out for information on the next job fair, which will take place later this year.
