On 26 April over 100 residents from Wornington Green and the surrounding area came to the Venture Centre to discover fun, new ways to stay fit and healthy.
The Venture Centre’s main hall was transformed with help from Catalyst Housing, Westway Sports and Open Age into an area of wellbeing and calm. Free yoga, zumba and aerobics classes were enjoyed by people of all ages. If you are over 50 and want to try some of the regular activity classes offered by Open Age, such as yoga, then you can contact them on 020 8962 4141 or visit their website. Likewise you may be interested in what Westway Sports has to offer, from climbing to tennis and football. Contact them on 020 8969 0992 or visit their website www.westwaysportscentre.org.uk.
The event also saw the launch of Catalyst’s new regular local health and social walks programme, Portobello Walks. Local residents have been trained as walk leaders and led a short walk along the Grand Union Canal. A calendar of regular walks, available to everyone, will be announced soon.
To encourage bike use, a trained mechanic from local social enterprise Bikeworks checked and fixed 20 bikes for free. RBKC’s Road Safety and Travel Plan team organised a very popular pedal powered smoothie making bike and promoted RBKCs’ free cycle awareness training courses. RBKC offers two hours of free cycling training to all adults who live, work or study in the borough. To find out more and book your session visit their website www.rbkc.gov.uk.
Rollapaluza provided some fun competition with their unique bike racing experience and Bikeworks offers services to the public including cycle training, all ability cycle clubs for disability groups and has two community cycle stores in Bethnal Green and Shepherds Bush. To find out more please visit www.bikeworks.org.uk.
‘It was fantastic to see so many people come and enjoy the sunshine and try out some of the taster sessions. The requests to have more community get togethers like this run from the centre was really encouraging.
The Venture Centre has been at the heart of Golborne since the 1960s offering activities for all communities and age groups and is a well loved resource. The area of Wornington Green is currently undergoing a major regeneration but we are committed to staying open and offering chances for communities to get together throughout the development of the new neighbourhood.’
Mary Gardiner, Acting Director of the Venture Centre
‘Everyone knows that being active and eating well has countless benefits, but getting started is easier said than done. Through Portobello Active and the launch of our new walking group we hope that people can find what works for them. We hope that the walking group will encourage people to explore the local area and all that it has to offer’.
Sue Hannah, Area Manager, Catalyst Housing

‘I loved the walk along the canal. I’ll definitely be going on more walks with the group in the future.’
