Aspiring entrepreneurs have been invited to market test their ideas on the world famous Portobello Market during ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight which runs from 14 May to 28 May.
Some 300 market pitches are available in the borough’s markets, Portobello Road, Golborne Road, and Portobello Green Vintage Market, to first-time traders. Stalls cost just £10 a day, with prizes awarded each week for the best new stall.
The theme this year is ‘youth in all its dimensions’ and the hope is to attract new traders and customers and invigorate the markets with youthful energy.
The Street Trading Office is also seeking proposals from community groups, charities, schools and colleges wishing to organise youth-themed markets on Friday 16 and Friday 23 May.
Last year a similar event attracted scores of have-a-go traders who sold a range of products including: men’s and women’s fashion, homemade cosmetics, children’s clothes, gourmet cookies and sauces and marinades.
Councillor Tim Ahern, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the markets, said: “We are very pleased to be able to give young people, and those young at heart, an opportunity to try their hand at trading on our markets which attract visitors from all over the world. What better place to have a stall and market test an idea? I hope that many people avail themselves of the opportunity to take a pitch.”
